You’ve been doing some thinking, and you’ve decided: you want to start a landscaping business. However, seeing as you’ve never started one before, you don’t know the first thing about doing so.

That’s why you’re reading this article: you need help on how to start a landscaping business. Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place. So, without further ado, here are some tips for starting a landscaping business.

1. Create a Business Plan

You might have an idea that starting a landscaping business is a laid-back and informal endeavor. In some cases, that might be true. However, if you want to make this work, you need to treat it like a legitimate business.

You can do this by creating a business plan. This should include everything from the company’s mission to its funding sources to its marketing ideas and more. It will create a framework for your business and give it a fighting chance at success.

2. Get on Social Media

Modern marketing demands that you be on social media. This way, you can correspond with potential customers personally and expose your brand consistently across several platforms.

Facebook is the big one. However, it’s also wise to be on Twitter and even Instagram. Advertise your social media business pages on your personal profiles, and, with any luck, you’ll nab your first few customers.

3. Start Small

There are all sorts of landscaping tasks that you could provide. However, in the early days, you probably shouldn’t try to provide all of them.

Why? Because these tasks require specific equipment, and if you don’t already have this equipment, you’re going to have to spend a boatload of money on it (view these attachments for reference). This can put you in the financial red when you don’t necessarily have to be, making it more difficult for your business to succeed.

We recommend starting small by offering only one or a few services. For instance, you could mow lawns and trim weeds. Then, once you’ve established a consistent client base, you could start adding more services, such as tree removal, tree trimming, and the like.

4. Get Your Name Out There

In the early days of a business, marketing is the difference-maker. The better you can market your business, the more customers you’ll find, and the quicker your business can grow.

As such, you need to get your name out there as much as possible. Put the name of your business on the side of your vehicle; Mention your business to everyone you meet; put a sign up in your yard. In essence: always be advertising.

Then, once you’ve obtained a few satisfied customers, they’ll start referring you to others. That’s when the consistent business begins.
