7 Ways to Prepare For And Ensure Safe Corporate Travel

Business travel is becoming more popular as it can be a great experience for both the traveler and the business. Not only are you building new relationships but you are bringing in new ideas and clientele when you travel for business.

Corporate travel can be stressful, though, as it demands literacy regarding business and travel logistics. When you are appointed to travel for your business, it is important that you are prepared for it.

Once you get word of your destination you should begin researching and making sure you have appropriate accommodations and transportation set in place. You also need to implement the necessary safety measures to ensure you are safe. Here are some safety tips that will help you prepare for your corporate travel, whether you are traveling alone or not.

1. Research your destination

To make sure you are at least prepared for your trip, you must research the destination that you are going. Most business travelers don’t get to decide which destination they go to as it is usually appointed to them. It is wise for every corporate traveler to gain a little knowledge about where they will do business.

When you are researching a destination, remember to look at culture differences and tourism etiquette to make sure that you aren’t being offensive and understand the people you will be doing business with. Read reviews on your hotels and accommodations to get an idea of what type of establishment you will be staying in.

2. Know where medical clinics are

This can be a part of your research, but you should know where the local police station and medical facilities are located. In a situation of emergency, you should be prepared and at least know where you can get assistance. This is essential if you get into an accident or get injured while you are on your trip.

It is also important for you to research and understand the difference in emergency phone numbers, especially if you are traveling outside of the country. You should be able to access emergency assistance whenever you need.

3. Invest in an international phone plan

Invest in an international phone plan to ensure you can contact anyone from your family and friends to your business officials or emergency contacts. The international phone plan will be beneficial if you are traveling overseas or to another country. Not only will it make your life easier while you travel for business but it will be more cost-effective as well. There are also other methods that can be just as beneficial as getting an international phone plan, like buying a SIM card or utilizing WiFi connections.

4. Make sure someone knows where you are

It’s also crucial to have someone that knows where you are. It’s important to let at least one person you know that you will be traveling for business and where. If something were to happen, you want someone to know how to access you. Try to always have a support system before you set off on your business journey.

Let your family member or friend know your itinerary to ensure you are where you should be, but not in a way that monitors your every move. For example, if you say you’re on your way to your meeting and you don’t arrive, you want your family member to be prepared to take the actions necessary if needed.

5. Travel light

Try not to overpack or pack things that you don’t necessarily need. It’s always ideal to pack light when you are traveling for business because it allows you to move more freely and is less costly to transport. Pack only the necessities and the appropriate documents you need. Make sure that you are considering the weather circumstances of your destination as well when you pack.

You should also try to stay away from using designer bags for your travel as they draw attention and can lead to a loss. Keep your expensive belongings in a safe place, whether that be at home or within a secure bag or casing.

6. Have travel insurance

Travel insurance may seem like it isn’t necessary, especially if you aren’t required to travel too far or too long. Travel insurance can act as a support system when accidental or unexpected situations occur. If you do intend on bringing your valuables, make sure you have a travel insurance plan set in place in case of loss or damage. Many travelers opt for no travel insurance, but if you want to ensure that your corporate travel is safe, getting travel insurance may be ideal for you.

Travel insurance is ideal for coverage on certain issues and damages while you are away from home. Some reasons why travelers opt for travel insurance is for:

  • Rental car damage
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Trip delay or cancellation
  • Illness or injury
  • Lost or delayed baggage

7. Be prepared for unexpected events

Overall, you want to be prepared for any unexpected events or emergencies. Being overall prepared means taking the proper precautions when it comes to accommodations and transportation. You want to know what to do if you have issues while on your business trip.

When you are away from home you are just as susceptible to accidents as you are at home. Understand the proper actions to take when you have been involved in an accident whether it is vehicular or not. Know when to get an injury lawyer if an injury takes place and report every detail back to your employers.

You also want to pack a small first aid kit for smaller scaled accidents. Practice awareness and pay attention to your surroundings as well. It can be easy to zone out while you are traveling, but you can miss something extremely important about your surroundings if you aren’t aware. If you want to have a safe and successful corporate trip, remember that you may experience unexpected events.
