How To Manage Your First Employees In A Startup

Managing your first employees is an important step and process of every new startup. Your first employees can either make or break the new business you are trying to set up. It is important to put in place measures to make sure they are comfortable in your work environment. A manager’s tasks include delegating tasks, enforcing rules, motivating employees, hiring and firing talent and non-performing employees respectively.

Encouraging and motivating your staff is equally crucial, particularly in the early days, when you need everyone to be passionate, committed and dedicated at creating and building your new products. It  is important to put emphasis on recruiting talented and already motivated individuals, that way you can avoid an unfair dismissal earlier on in your business.

Motivation does not necessarily means only monetary incentives but offering employees  new leadership roles, recognition by executive board, opportunities for career growth when the company expands, rewarding excellence and celebrating achievement when you hit your milestones. Create an environment that makes your employees happy when they come to work. Focus on what makes your employees really happy at what they do. The attitude of your employees will and can reflect on their overall attitude and performance.

Create and work with both long-term and short-term goals. Set weekly goals and give room for individuals to work on their tasks without imposing the process of achieving those goals on your employees. Encourage interactions and conversations with employees, after all there are just a few of you trying to create an empire from scratch. People work better in an environment without stress, tension and pressure.

The workforce of a new business or startup is its most important asset. Do all you can to take good care of your employees and you will see results.  Communicate clearly stated goals and tasks preferably in person and allow your employees to creatively accomplish tasks with little or no interference and they will be happy to deliver on schedule.

Allow your workers to work together as a team on projects without imposing a manager or leader on them. Leaders and managers selected by the team can better work together as a unit to achieve goals and tasks. Empower the team with resources to achieve their goals. And always remember , there are better ways to motivate employees to achieve more.
